Thursday Thoughts: Marriage
My Hubby fixed our laptop, so I can finally post again! Speaking on my husband...
Today's passion is on marriage! I don't know why I didn't start with this one, because I love my man way more than I do singing. And no, as much as I'd like to, I'm not going to brag about Wesley this whole post.
Instead, I'm going to share a little of what I've learned through almost two years of marriage (It flies by so quickly!)
First, the biggest killer to any relationship really is ungratefulness. If you do not have an attitude of gratitude towards your husband, bitter thoughts and irritations at little things start creeping in, and before you know it, you are having issues in your marriage and you don't know why. Several times when I have felt irritated at Wesley, if I looked close enough, it was because I stopped focusing on the positive things about him and was only paying attention to the negative (which is hardly any. I have a very good man). It's not to say if there are issues in your marriage you just ignore them, but gratefulness can give you a clearer head to think about them logically.
Another thing that really really helps is humility. This is one big thing the Lord has been working with me on. I have come to realize how prideful I really am. It's scary. I am one of the most judgmental people I know. I have been praying and working with Jesus on loving people, but it's a slow and painful process. But I have noticed that when I react to Wesley in pride, then he reacts to that in a negative way. Humility goes a long way again in any relationship.
Speaking primarily to the wives, I want to stress that while you are not a doormat, you are the most precious gift that God gave to your husband. We are meant to be soft, loving, respectful, and humble servants who wish to make our man happy. I might step on a few toes when I say this, but I firmly believe that women were placed here on earth for the sole purpose of making our hubby happy and complete. I love my job. :-)
Those are two things that I have learned in the past two years of wonderful marital bliss (okay, it hasn't all been bliss, but mostly). I can't imagine loving someone more deeply than I do my lover, and I am constantly amazed by his love and patience with me.
Here are a few resources I have read and found encouraging and enlightening:
Debi Pearl: Created To Be His Help Meet
Chip Ingram: House or Home Marriage Study
Debi Pearl: The Hidden Help Meet
Timothy Keller: The Meaning of Marriage
Pam Farrel: 52 Ways to Wow Your Husband
Kimberly Wagner: Fierce Women
With love and gratefulness,
Emily
